Rapeseed Header: How to Reduce Losses When Harvesting Fine Seed

Rapeseed is one of the most challenging crops to harvest because of its extremely fine, fragile seed. Pods split open at the slightest mechanical impact, and part of the harvest shatters onto the ground before the header even reaches it. Here's how to set up a header for rapeseed and minimize fine seed loss.

Why Rapeseed Requires a Different Approach

Unlike cereal crops, where losses are measured in individual grains, rapeseed losses are counted in thousands of tiny seeds per square meter. A pod cracks open from vibration, a reel strike, or even a sudden gust of wind during ripening. Standard header settings calibrated for wheat or barley simply don't work for rapeseed.

Specialized Attachments for Rapeseed Harvesting

Rapeseed table (header extension). This is the single most important attachment - it extends the cutting mechanism forward and to the sides, allowing pods to be cut before they come into contact with the reel. Without a rapeseed table, shatter losses increase dramatically, since a standard header table length is simply too short for rapeseed.

Side knives (dividers). Special vertical knives along the header's edges cut stalks cleanly rather than tearing them - tearing creates additional vibration that triggers cracking in neighboring pods.

Reduced reel speed. The reel for rapeseed is set to the minimum necessary rotation speed and positioned as far back and up as possible, so the bats have minimal contact with the pods.

Adjusting for Moisture and Ripeness

The optimal harvesting window for rapeseed is narrow - when the majority of pods have reached technical maturity and seed moisture is around 9-12%. Earlier than that, the seed is still underripe; later, the risk of shattering from the slightest mechanical impact rises sharply.

Timing recommendations: it's better to harvest rapeseed in the morning or evening, when pods are slightly moistened by dew - this reduces their brittleness compared to midday, when heat dries out the pod shell to the maximum.

Combine Ground Speed

Ground speed needs to be reduced compared to cereal harvesting - sudden movement and vibration from uneven field terrain transfer directly to the pods through the header frame. On rougher sections of the field, it's worth slowing down further, even if it extends harvest time.

Desiccation as a Tool for Reducing Losses

Many farms use pre-harvest desiccation of rapeseed, which evens out ripening across the field and allows harvest to start earlier, before pods reach critical brittleness. This isn't a header adjustment, but an agronomic technique that significantly eases equipment operation and reduces losses.

Equipment Check Before Starting

Before heading into the field, check the condition of the cutting mechanism's knives (dull knives tear stalks instead of cutting them) and make sure there's no play in the rapeseed table's mounting to the main header frame - any vibration from worn connections increases shattering.

Reducing losses during rapeseed harvest comes down to a combination of the right equipment (rapeseed table, side knives), precise reel speed and combine ground speed settings, and choosing the optimal time of day to work. None of these factors alone produces results without the others.
