Corn Headers: The Technology of Clean Ear Harvesting

A corn header is a complex, high-technology, and highly specialized implement, fundamentally different in design from all other header types. Its primary task is not merely to cut the crop, but to perform a precise in-field separation: to detach the ears from the stalks, feeding only the target part of the harvest into the combine's threshing system. Simultaneously, it must chop and leave the entire massive vegetative matter on the field.

Attempting to direct-cut corn with a standard grain header is impossible—it would instantly clog the thresher with a massive volume of wet, tough stalks. This is precisely why the specialized row-crop header was developed.

How a Corn Header Works:

Each of its working modules (row units) is designed for a single row of corn.

  1. Row Dividers (Snouts): These gently lift any lodged stalks and guide them accurately into the row unit channel.

  2. Gathering Chains: These chains grip the stalk and begin to actively pull it downward.

  3. Snapping Plates (or Snapping Rolls): This is the "heart" of the header. They form a narrow gap through which the stalk is pulled down at high speed. The ear, due to its size, cannot pass through this gap. It strikes the plates and is "snapped" off the stalk.

  4. Collection System: The detached ear is caught by the gathering chains and fed to a central cross auger, which transports the clean ears (with husks, but no stalks) into the combine's feeder house.

  5. Stalk Chopper (Optional, but common): Simultaneously, as the stalk is pulled down, knives (a horizontal rotary chopper) located underneath the unit cut and shred the stalk into small pieces, distributing them evenly on the field.

Benefits of Using a Specialized Header:

When selecting a corn header, the key parameters are row spacing (which must perfectly match your planter's spacing, typically 70 or 75 cm / 30 inches) and the number of rows (6, 8, 12), which is chosen based on your combine's power and capacity.
