The header is the first and one of the most critical links in the harvest chain. It is a combine-mounted or trailed attachment that cuts the crop and feeds the material to the threshing apparatus. Grain loss depends directly on how well it works: even the most powerful combine won't deliver results if the header runs inefficiently. Its main job is a clean, uniform cut and a continuous, smooth flow of material that keeps the threshing system at a stable load.

Types of headers

Grain (all-crop) headers

The most common type for small grains (wheat, barley, rye, oats), as well as rapeseed/canola and soybeans. They use a cutterbar (sickle knife), a reel and an auger that moves the crop to the centre. For soybeans, a flexible cutterbar (flex) follows the ground contour and works at minimal cutting height.

Corn headers

Highly specialised, row-specific units that work by stripping the ears from the stalk. Gathering points lift the stalk, snapping rolls pull it down and snap off the ear, and stalk choppers shred the remaining stalk onto the field.
