Working width. Must match the working width of the seeder or cultivator the roller is used with. A width mismatch results in uneven consolidation.

Soil type. On heavy soils prone to crust formation, ring and packer rollers are the better choice. On lighter soils - smooth or toothed rollers.

Weight and ground pressure. An overly heavy roller on wet soil can over-consolidate the plough layer and damage its structure. Optimal pressure is selected according to the mechanical composition of the soil.
